The inside base depicts a seated figure, which is repeated on the wall. The outlines of the figures and the ornaments in the spaces between them are painted in a reddish luster. The seated figure is a characteristic of the ‘monumental style’, in which a high-ranking figure is depicted sitting cross-legged.
Lustre painting is an elaborate decorative technique in which metallic pigments lend a shimmering sheen. Two precisely coordinated firing processes are required to fix the lustre on the glaze. The light-colored quartz frit has a white coating to make the painting stand out better.
